How to draw a bunny: base sketch step by step

Step 1: Sketch the bunny's head and body base shapes

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (2)

As usual, we will learn how to draw a bunny by starting from a few simple shapes to define the base proportions.

Draw a small narrow oval for the head. Split it roughly in quarters with the head cross – the head will be slightly tilted to the left and down.

Then draw another larger and wider ellipses under the head a bit to the right – this will be the lower part of the body.

Finally, connect the two ellipses together with smooth curves from the bottom and rear of the head down to the sides of the lower ellipse to mark the bunny’s body shape.

Step 2: Sketch the bunny's face

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (3)

Let’s use the sketched face cross to place the bunny’s facial features. Start with two small ovals for the eyes, placed symmetrically around the vertical face line in the upper half of the face.

Then draw two circles for the nostrils placed on each side of the vertical middle line and just under the horizontal face line. Connect the two nostrils with a half-circle on the top – this will be the nose.

Then draw two rectangular teeth sticking down from between the nostrils. Finish the face with two “J” curve cheeks, starting where the vertical face line crosses the head oval and smoothly joining to the bottom of the chin.

Step 3: Sketch the bunny's ears

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (4)

The trademark feature of any bunny is its long ears – let’s sketch the bunny’s ears next.

The ear on the right will be straight. Draw two curved lines that start close together on the head and slightly widen apart on the far end. Then carve out the top part of the ear tip and join it to the lower curve.

The ear on the left will be folded down. Start with the same two curves for the first half of the ear going up. Then fold the outer edge line down and carve out the tip of the ear again. Finish with the inner line of the folded ear.

Step 4: Sketch the bunny's arms

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (5)

Some simple bunny arms are coming up next. Our bunny will carry a big carrot over his shoulder, so his arms will be folded in front of his body.

All you need to draw is the outer shape of the arms – a line down from the shoulder to the elbow and a line folded back towards the body for each arm. Then add the rounded ends for the paws.

Step 5: Sketch the bunny's legs

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (6)

Now our bunny needs some legs.

The foot on the right leg will be on the ground. Draw a “U” curve for the thigh that extends from the back of the body and curves a bit down under the body. Then add a flat “D” shape for the foot just under the thigh and join it to the thigh with two lines to complete the right leg.

The foot on the left will be up in the air as the bunny walks. Draw the drop-shaped sole first. Then thicken up the foot with the top line. Finally, join the foot to the body with two short lines to finish the leg.

Step 6: Sketch the carrot and tail

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (7)

The last important bunny trademark is the bunny’s short tail. Draw it almost circular, with a pointed tip.

Finally, draw the carrot that the bunny is carrying. The carrot is a long, narrowtriangle. To add some volume, draw the top of the carrot as an oval. Then add some leaves – just a few lines for the stems at this stage.

That is pretty much how to draw a bunny. All that is left is to improve the sketch by adding some details while you are outlining the bunny drawing.

How to draw a bunny: outline the drawing step by step

Step 1: Draw the bunny's face

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (9)

With the sketch done, it is time to outline and improve on the simple bunny drawing.

Start by filling out the nose and eyes, leaving small white patches for the “shine”. Draw the bunny’s mouth – this is the anchor-like partial outline of the two nostril circles. Then outline the teeth from the sketch. Finally, add small eyebrows above the eyes.

Step 2: Draw the right ear

Outline the right ear. For the outer edge, follow the sketched outline, smoothing out the sharp corner for the “cutout” at the tip of the ear. Then double up on the top line to draw the inner part of the ear.

Step 3: Draw the bunny's head

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (11)

Next up, outline the bunny’s head. Join the upper half of the head oval with the wide cheeks. Add some scruffy fur to the cheeks and for the “hair” on the top of the head – just a zig-zag line similar to the one we used on our monkey, hamster, scruffy dog or many other animal drawing tutorials.

Step 4: Finish drawing the bunny's face and other ear

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (12)

With the head outlined, we can draw the other ear that is hiding behind it. Similar to the straight ear, outline the top edge from the sketch all the way to the ear tip, smoothing out any sharp corners. Then draw the inner double-up line – notice how it starts following the upper edge of the ear from the head, and then transitions smoothly to the lower edge of the down-folded part of the ear. Finish the ear outline by drawing the last lower edge.

Then finish drawing the bunny’s nostrils – outline them again with the furry zig-zag line between the nose and the “anchor” mouth, following the sketched ovals.

Step 5: Draw the bunny's arms

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (13)

Outline the bunny’s arms next. The improvements on the sketch here are adding three fingers to the paws – those are drawn as small “J” curves – and some scruffy fur near the elbows.

Step 6: Draw the carrot

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (14)

Before we finish drawing the bunny’s body, we need to draw the carrot. Draw the carrot stalks first. Then outline the carrot, adding a few small zig-zag dents into the smooth sides. Add another “C” shaped half oval under the stalk ends to mark the centre of the carrot.

Step 7: Draw the bunny's body

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (15)

With the carrot in place, we can finish drawing the bunny’s body outline. Join the bunny’s back and the front leg into one curve, again adding a few zig-zags to suggest some scruffy fur.

Then finish the bunny’s belly – just a straight outline from the sketch.

Finally, draw the short tail again with some scruffy zig-zag fur lines.

Step 8: Draw the bunny's feet and legs

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (16)

Let’s finish drawing the bunny’s feet. Similar to the hands or paws, draw three fingers on each foot as small “C” shapes lined up one next to the other.

Then finish drawing the feet, transitioning to the legs following the sketched outline. Notice the bits of the sketch that were left out to join the feet and legs together.

Step 9: Draw the bunny's whiskers and chest fur

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (17)

Here are the final improvements on our bunny drawing. Outline the bunny’s chest and tummy with the zig-zag line to suggest some white fur on the bunny’s tummy.

And finally, every bunny needs some whiskers – draw three straight lines sticking out from each cheek.

Step 10: Add carrot details

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (18)

The very last detail to add is some textures on the carrot. Draw some lines on the body of the carrot to suggest the wrinkled skin texture. Then add bunches of short lines along the stems to make some carrot leaves.

How to draw a bunny: finished drawing coloured-in

How to Draw a Bunny - An Easy Cartoon Bunny Drawing (21)

Now that you know how to draw a bunny, all that is left is to colour in the drawing.

A bunny’s fur can have many colours and patterns. Here we are going for a simple, light beige fur with white patches on the bunny’s cheeks, chest and tail for some variety. Use a darker brown shade for the inner ears and foot sole.

The carrot is of course orange with green leaves and stalks.

And that is it – now you know how to draw a bunny!
